Waifulabs is an innovative platform developed by Sizigi Studios, a team of MIT researchers and artists. It utilizes state-of-the-art deep learning technology, specifically a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), to create custom anime portraits of both waifus and husbandos. Originally launched as the 'Waifu Vending Machine' at Anime Expo 2019, Waifulabs enables users to easily generate and customize unique anime characters with diverse backgrounds. It serves artists, enthusiasts, and game studios wishing to scale character design for personal, creative, or commercial projects.

How It Works

  • A neural network learns to paint anime characters through repeated practice.
  • Technology is powered by a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) composed of:
    • A Generator AI that draws anime art
    • A Discriminator AI that distinguishes between AI- and human-made art
  • Both AIs are trained on extensive anime datasets, with ongoing feedback for refinement.
  • After training, the Generator acts as an artist, producing unique portraits.
  • The user creation process consists of four easy steps:
    • Choose and input initial character preferences
    • Browse diverse AI-generated options
    • Customise chosen characters to your liking
